News has emerged of a statute to be erected to one of our best loved late lamented comedians, the one and only Les Dawson. The statue will be unveiled on October 24th 2008 on Lytham St Annes seafront and will be sited in a new Garden of Fame where other Fylde Coast favourites will also be honoured. A list of celebrities has been drawn up to accompany Les and our very own George Formby is there amongst Bill Beaumont, Brian London, Stan Mortenson, Tony Jacklin, Al Read, Joe Longthorne and famed Blackpool Circus clown Charlie Cairoli. A special evening to launch this very unique occasion is to be held at Blackpool Football Club, Bloomfield Road, Blackpool on Thursday, October 23rd 2008 and the special guest will be Sir Tom Finney. Tickets are £65 per person or a table seating 10 people can be obtained for £600. This promises to be a very special evening and you are urged to contact the organisers to book tickets on 01562 887323. It has definitely been confirmed that George Formby will be one of the recipients in the Garden of Fame and GFS President Gerry Mawdsley and his wife Vivien will be present at the event to receive the award on behalf of The George Formby Society. I know that other GFS members have already booked tickets for this event. If any other GFS members are interested, why not email the GFS and perhaps we can help you to link up with other members on the evening. Fylde Borough Council are behind this event and have always been good friends to The George Formby Society, please endeavour to support them in this venture and help to honour Les Dawson, George Formby and other great Fylde Coast personalities past and present.
