frank skinner on formby
I have heard of the gift that keeps on giving but this must be the show
that keeps on repeating - thankfully!
It was one of the best things that ever happened to The George Formby
Society, internationally popular comedian Frank Skinner professed his
love for all things George Formby and in a hour-long feature he came to
a Blackpool convention, visited the Warrington memorial and bought
himself a nice Gibson instrument to play to the capacity audience within
the Imperial Hotel.
Frank, and producer (Daniel Wiles) of the famed feature on George
which was created in 1991 for The South Bank Show, endeavoured to
tell George’s story once again, and they did it brilliantly!
I must confess that when I learned that Daniel had decided to re-tell the
story with Frank Skinner, I thought, “what is there to say that wasn’t said
in 1991,” but the two of them (and their team) pulled off a wonderful
tribute not only to the man, but also to the George Formby Society and
all its members.
The show when it was first broadcast, had an amazing effect, not only
on the membership, but also on the takings in the George Formby
Shop! Due to repeats, the new found popularity for all things Formby
continued for at least the next two years, with full house attendances at
the GFS conventions in Blackpool and increased membership and
popularity within the GFS branches.
Now the BBC have decided to screen the show once again and you can
tune in on Friday 22 December 2017 at 21:00 (9:00pm) and then again
at 02:00 on Saturday 23 December 2017 so make sure you are there to
enjoy a fantastic tribute to George Formby and the GFS - a great story
is always worth retelling!
BBC4 repeats the hit show on December 24th 2017
