This instrument was kindly donated to the GFS by the family of the late Dennis Street, a long-standing member of the Society. The committee have decided to offer this wonderful instrument for sale to members by closed bids. Not only will this raise important funds for our Society, but it will also allow Dennis’s instrument to be played and enjoyed for many more years to come. This is a superb example of a Dallas ‘D’ Banjo Ukulele, manufactured in the late 30’s and endorsed by George Formby. Constructed from Birds Eye Maple, the Uke is in immaculate original condition, perfectly set up with a low playing action, fantastic tone, and complete with its original case. The most unusual aspect of this example is the fact that it has 12 robust tone ring supports instead of the usual 6 thin brass fixings. This makes for a much-improved sound.George Formby himself owned at least two ‘D’ models and used them throughout his film and stage career. The Dallas ‘D’ continues to be a well respected instrument. This instrument will be available to view at the April Blackpool Convention. If you are unable to attend the Spring meeting, then please view the a demonstration video at the bottom of this page. Please forward your bids by email to the Chairman, Lewis Clifton, before Friday 05th May 2023. The successful highest bidder will be announced in the Summer edition of ‘The Vellum’. Please note, it is the buyer’s responsibility to collect the instrument or arrange delivery.
