george formby club
25,000 members!
The George Formby Club was formed in June 1937 and carried on throughout the 1940s before disbanding I believe in 1946. Some of the members of our Society would have been members of the Fan Club, especially in the early 1960s when the GFS was formed. The last person who I spoke with on the subject of the fan club was the late Alf Harper of London who was a member. He told me that when the club disbanded, George Formby put on a free show at the London Palladium for the members in 1946. At its height, membership of the Fan Club was between 25,000 and 35,000 members’ There are just a few magazines from the GFS archives I have the pleasure of making them all available on the GFS website.
