Lovely sunny weather greeted racegoers at Haydock Park today, 26 May 2017 where the 4:05pm race was one of the days events to mark the 113th birthday of George Formby. The George Formby Birthday Maiden Fillies Stakes was won by Smart Together ridden by William Buick (I lost £10 when I backed the fourth runner Polly Glide!) and GFS President Gerry Mawdsley and his wife Vivien (who is also the GFS Secretary) presented the trophies to the winning owner and jockey. Then for all Formby fans, the best bit of the day was when we performed Leaning On A Lamp Post in the winners enclosure in front of a multitude of happy racegoers, giving George Formby some wonderful publicity. The song ended with the enthusiastic approval of a delighted audience and must have given many a nice reminder of what George Formby was all about. We also had the usual double page Formby biography in the official programme and what with the lovely weather and the performance in the winners enclosure, it proved once again that its “TURNED OUT NICE AGAIN!”
