On Friday 24 February 2017, the last meeting of the Sheffield branch
took place in Worsborough Sports Club before their move to a new
  venue.
The branch suffered owing to falling attendances and a very high
room charge. Whilst there was in the last few months, plenty of
empty seats, the entertainment was as usual as good as anywhere
else where you may hear Formby music.
To be honest, I cannot really understand why the attendance has
fallen so much. There is always a friendly welcome and the meeting
offered a buffet supper and a raffle and some of the best players and
entertainers in the GFS so you would think that the room would be
packed. One possibility could be that the room was too large and
  consequently did lack atmosphere.
The branch almost failed in September 2015 when Ian Walker stood
down as organiser and no one appeared to want to take over the
running of the meeting. Thankfully, GFS tuition expert Andy
Poppleton stepped up to the mark and kept the branch going. I have
been going to the Sheffield branch since the opening meeting in
March 1997 and it would have been a tragedy if such a long running
  branch had failed.
Given that Andy is a full time worker (most other organisers of
branches are retired), I wish to thank him on behalf of all the
members of the branch for stepping up to the plate to make sure
that Sheffield can still boast a night of George Formby music each
  and every month.
Now the branch has a new night, a new venue, new organisers and a
fresh start to take it in to its twenty first year!
The venue is Ward Green W.M.C, 129 Mount Vernon Road,
  Worsborough, Barnsley S70 4HH
The new organisers are Ian Walker, Daz Barry and Neville Roe and the
first meeting at the new venue will take place on Monday 27 March
2017 and every fourth Monday thereafter.
In the past the Sheffield branch has resided at various other venues
so another change is not too serious, but the meeting has always taken place on the last Friday in the month so a switch to
Monday is the only unknown quantity.
Considering the strength of the last twenty years and the efforts of the three new organisers plus the help of Kevin Staniland and
Cathy Darlington, also the support of past and present members, let’s hope that the new venture is a roaring success.
When you consider that the very first meeting will be the actual twentieth anniversary meeting of the branch, I cannot see it failing.
