GEORGE FORMBY SONGBOOKS : A REVIEW.

By Lewis Clifton.

“MADE BY FORMBY FANS, FOR FORMBY FANS”

The first volume of the George Formby Songbook was produced for the Society shop by former GFS President Dennis Taylor. It’s simple and clear approach made it very easy for beginners to understand, and it quickly became popular amongst members and Formby enthusiasts. Since Dennis’ passing in 2011, Peter Pollard and Dickie Speake have increased the George Formby Songbook collection to an impressive 5 volumes covering 186 Formby songs. Volumes 1 and 2 cover many of those Formby classics we enjoy at conventions and branches, but why stop there? Volumes 3, 4, and 5 open the doors to countless brilliant Formby numbers you may not have heard before. “Swinging Along, Singing A Song”, “The Blue Eyed Blonde Next Door”, “As The Hours And The Days”. Terrific songs just waiting to be discovered. In recent times, there has been a lot of false information shared on social media claiming the ‘George Formby Complete’ book published in the early 1970’s is the most reliable source available when it comes to Formby songs. THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE. Although the George Formby Complete features some nice photos of George, many of the songs are presented in the wrong key and with chords George never used. The fact is, putting aside George’s amazing right hand technique, the chords Formby used in his music were simple, and it is these same chords which are covered in the George Formby Society Songbooks. This is brilliant news for beginners or anyone who just wants to happily strum along in the thrash or on stage. These books are made by Formby fans, for Formby fans. The George Formby Society Songbooks were the starting blocks for many of your favourite Formby players and continue to be a solid reference for GFS members. Every penny of each sale goes to the Society funds and helps us to continue George’s legacy. So please remember to support the GFS Shop.
