I wish to inform all my father’s friends from the GFS that my father passed away peacefully at 7pm on Easter Sunday from prostate cancer. My father was an accomplished guitarist who taught himself the ukulele in sunny Seville where he lived with his wife and daughters. He joined the GFS in 2007 and I had the privilege of joining him on his first visit to the Blackpool Convention in November that year. The Convention was something that he looked forwards to. He loved the music and the people he met. You were all so welcoming! Not only did he contribute musically to the Convention but wrote many articles for the Vellum over the years. He is probably best known for the popular ‘Brian’s Quiz’. He wasn’t able to join the Convention for the last three years but he was very much there in spirit. Samantha West (Brian’s daughter)
I am greatly saddened by the news of the passing of our good friend, Brian West. Brian was very popular with all who knew him in the GFS and would travel from Spain quite regularly to be with us in Blackpool. He certainly made his mark from the convention stage and also made his mark within The Vellum with numerous articles and letters which I feel sure our readers would have been very grateful for. In short, Brian was an ideal member of the GFS, he made a worthy contribution even though he was many miles away. Never afraid to "dress for the part," Brian was a real character which is such a rarity in this day and age. On behalf of all the members of The George Formby Society, I extend sincere condolences to Samantha and the rest of Brian's family. Peter Pollard - 14/04/2023
